Meet The Maker - Nastasia Morris
Posted by Angie CHIA on
Our next maker is no stranger to most sewists here! We're so pleased to be featuring Nastasia Morris in our 2nd blog for November. We just love Nastasia's work. She always brings such a fresh new perspective in her use of embroidery and stunning makes for her gorgeous children. You can find Nastasia's work on Poshpilar.
Tell us a little bit about yourself...
My husband and I were born and raised in fabulous Las Vegas and are now raising our four kids here. I love sewing for both myself and my children. I have a business sewing custom dance costumes and I also teach dance. I grew up as a competitive dancer and now all three of my girls are too.
How did you learn to sew and when?
I really learned to sew in college. Previous to that, I tried to make some aprons that didn’t hold up well. 🤣 I took a course that taught me everything that I needed to get hooked on sewing clothing. My first project was pajama pants and by the end of the course, I had made a collared shirt and dress. After having children I started sewing for them - mostly for holidays and special occasions. When the pandemic hit, I really dove into sewing a ton!
What's your favourite type of fabric to work with?
I love natural fiber fabrics like cotton and linen. They wash and wear so well. I’m a sucker for knit fabrics too, because I find them so quick to sew.
What's your favourite Peony make to date?
It’s so hard for me to choose, but I love the Jasmine dress I made using a Liberty of London floral. Jasmine was one of my very first Peony makes and will always be a favourite of mine.
What are your sewing goals for this year?
I have been expanding my skills with drafting, pattern making, and hacking, and have a goal to continue doing so.
What sewing tip have you learned along the way that you use all the time and why?
The edgestitch foot is the best! It keeps all topstitching looking perfect! Also, projecting patterns is my absolute favorite. It’s a major time saver.
What is your biggest sewing achievement or challenge to date? Tell us about it!
It was a lot of fun to sew for and be featured in the Joann mailer. My kids got a kick out of getting the mail and seeing themselves. I’m constantly being challenged by the custom dance costumes I make. They all start with a sketch and then, sometimes after a lot of versions, I bring them to life. It’s even more fun to see my creations danced in on stage!
Take your time and remember we all started from somewhere!
