Meet The Maker - Jessica Lynn

Wow, how is it November already! For this month, we are so pleased to be speaking with a very talented and lovely maker, Jessica Lynn. Jessica loves anything vintage and retro from fashion to furniture. You can find Jessica and her beautiful creations on IG @mcmamamade.
Tell us a little bit about yourself...
I’m a wife and mama to four kiddos; two boys - Sam (9) and Caleb (7), and two girls - Hannah (5) and Abigail (4). We live in the southeastern US and I homeschool my kids all year-round. I grew up going to flea markets and antique shows with my grandparents so I have a deep love for anything vintage from furniture to fashion! I also love live music, dancing, and a good cup of tea.
How did you learn to sew and when?
My mother-in-law helped me make all the curtains for my home when I was first married, but it wasn’t until I had two little girls that I really got excited about sewing again. In the last four years I’ve sewn around 4 garments a month and really learned from “practice makes progress.” Sewing is my full-time hobby now and it’s brought me some of my closest friends!
What's your favourite type of fabric to work with?
I add a lot of hand embroidery to my makes so fabrics like linen and cotton are some of my favourites. But I am drawn to anything with texture and I’ve been really excited about how much my sewing has improved with knits.
What's your favourite Peony make to date?
Probably my Christmas Dahlia dress from last year. I worked with a new kind of fabric for me (taffeta) and I just love the way the whole look turned out!
What are your sewing goals for this year?
I’ve made it my goal to sew more for myself. I also want to start teaching my five year old about the sewing machine. She has a keen interest and has started with hand embroidery so I would love to pass on all I have learned.
What sewing tip have you learned along the way that you use all the time and why?
Marking the seam allowance on my fabric before sewing helps me to see where to stop, drop my needle, and pivot to change directions! It’s helped me sandwich straps neatly, get the perfect v-neck and more!
What is your biggest sewing achievement or challenge to date? Tell us about it!
Sewing up some 40+ yards to tulle to create a luxe Mimosa dress for my oldest daughter was a huge achievement! The whole time I doubted whether I was ready for such a challenge but it turned out just like I had imagined and my daughter was over the moon with joy!
What advice would you give to someone learning to sew?
Read through the entire tutorial for your pattern before you start. Knowing where the steps are leading helps the trickier things to make more sense! It also helps you to prepare or research any techniques that are new to you.
