Welcome to our 2nd instalment of Meet the Maker for September! Let us introduce you to Annie who has the most meticulous embroidery and exquisite handmade dresses. Her attention to detail and exceptional print matching skills are truly remarkable. Did you know that she made her own wedding dress??!!! Tell us a little bit about yourself...
I live in a beach side suburb of Melbourne, Australia with my husband and two beautiful children and our cat. My passions in life are my kids, sewing, costuming/ dressing up and dancing.
How did you learn to sew and when?
When I was 9 years old, I was unwell with an auto immune system disease. I spent three months traveling around the coast of Australia with my grandparents in their caravan to rest and recover. It was during this time that my Grandma first taught me to embroider and use a sewing machine, she continued throughout the years to teach me how to make my own clothes. One of my most vivid memories of sewing at around age 14 is her teaching me how to make sure the stripes on the plaid pants I was making lined up perfectly across the front and back.
What's your favourite type of fabric to work with?
I love to work with swim spandex, it has such a beautiful flow for dresses, doesn't need hemming which is especially great for circle skirts and is so comfortable to wear.
What's your favourite Peony make to date?
It would have to be the dress that I made for last Halloween using the Witch Hazel embroidery pattern and a mash of a few different dresses. The whole dress just came together exactly how I had imagined, it was also the first piece of embroidery I had done after my Grandma who taught me to sew and embroider had passed and was stitched with her threads making it an extra special piece for me.
What are your sewing goals for this year?
One of my big goals for this year is to stay away from gifting plastic toys and throw away items and give more handmade items instead.
What sewing tip have you learned along the way that you use all the time and why?
Mine is to take your time laying out patterns on your fabric before cutting to make sure everything lines up nicely especially when matching stripes and prints.
What is your biggest sewing achievement or challenge to date? Tell us about it!
Sewing my dress alongside my three bridesmaids, Mum and Nanna's dresses for my wedding back in 2010. It really was a fulfilment of my childhood dream.
What advice would you give to someone learning to sew?
To trust the measurement tables on patterns because bodies are all different sizes and one of the best parts of sewing is the satisfaction of seeing your child in clothes that fit them perfectly and knowing you made it.
