Posted by Natasha Tung on

Peony Patterns Costume Party 2023 is HERE! I'm Nat (from AusChick Sews blog) and I’ll be your host this week. Every year we ask our talented pool of pattern testers to create a costume using a combination of any of the sewing patterns in our collection, and they never disappoint! This year’s costume round-up includes your favorite characters from movies, tv, cartoons, books, anime, and a slew of fantasy characters, famous artists, witches, garden gnomes and MORE! I can’t wait to share these amazing projects with you!

Today’s creations are all based on storybook characters. This is a category we have each year, and I just love how there’s so much variation from year to year! Be sure to join our Facebook Group and give some love to each of the makers below!

Alice in Wonderland

First we’re going to jump down the rabbit hole with these incredible creations by Laura Hilton (@LittleBonnieBelle) and Natasha Chrismas (@natashachrismas) ! Earlier in the year, Laura visited Tash in Australia and together they made this epic Queen of Hearts costume for Tash’s daughter, Ellie. We love the effect of the color blocking on this one!

Patterns used: Calliandra with simple bodice and Myrtle sleeves

Fabric: Solid cottons from Hobby Lobby

Photography: Natasha Chrismas

Laura loves to make group costumes for her daughter and her friends, and Alice in Wonderland is just perfect for that! Laura’s daughter, Bonnie, has been obsessed with the Mad Hatter ever since she saw it at Tuachan, UT (an outdoor theater) and we just LOVE how her vision came together! The spools of thread are the perfect, unexpected touch!

Patterns used: Dahlia (Mad Hatter), Honeysuckle (Alice), Rosemary (Tweedledee and Tweedledum), Posie (White Rabbit), Mimosa (Cheshire Cat), Bellflower Capelet (Dormouse)

Fabric: Swiss cotton organdy, velvet, shirting, silk, swiss dot, edging (Farmhouse Fabrics); tulle; Rifle Paper floral, Art Gallery solid cotton (Fabric, Lace & Trim)

Rainbow Fish

How cool is Hannah Pilgrim’s (@allie_artie_handmade) Rainbow Fish! She made detachable silver scales so her daughter can share them with her friends at kindergarten during Book Week! Such a great idea for encouraging children to practice the joy of sharing!

Patterns used: Poppy, Freesia

Fabric: Spotlight Australia

Shirley Barber’s Tooth Fairy

Hannah Granvillani’s (@avaandesmaehandmade) daughter, Esmae, picked the Tooth Fairy from Shirley Barber’s book, because she wears a beautiful pink sparkly dress and Esmae had lost her first tooth a week or so before book week!

Patterns: Myrtle sleeves, Wisteria bodice and skirt length

Fabric: Sparkly tulle and cotton poplin (Spotlight Australia)

Claris the Chicest Mouse in Paris

Kylie (@kleemayers) created a stunning pink dress for her daughter who loves admiring all of Claris’ beautiful gowns in the book series! Her daughter has done such a great job recreating the poses!

Patterns: Gardenia bodice, Mimosa skirt

Fabric: Glitter tulle, quilting fabric (Spotlight Australia)

Billy and the Mini Monsters

Melissa Rick selected Sparkle Bogey from Billy and the Mini Monsters since her model is a big fan! The vibrant colors and perfect embroidery on the front give the costume such a great illustrated look!

Patterns: Honeysuckle

Fabric: Spotlight Australia

Do Not Open This Book!

Ruth (@ohh_sew_chloe_zakk) never ceases to amaze us with her creative costumes! She picked Wizz from the Do Not Open This Book series because so many kids love the series and the character is unique.

Patterns: Wattle, Peach

Fabric: Polyester elastane blend (Spotlight Australia)
