Note - If your doll has a lot of hair, do sew the cap with a slightly wider seam allowance to give the fit slightly more room to accommodate the extra volume.

Cutting Checklist

If creating the cap with a fabric that does not fray, such as felt, there is no need to line the cap.

Upper Cap:
Unlined     Cut 1 main on the fold.
Lined         Cut 2 upper cap pieces on the fold (1 main, 1 lining).

Lower Cap:
Unlined     Cut 1 main on the fold.
Lined        Cut 2 front bodice pieces on the fold (1 main, 1 lining).

Constructing the Cap - Unlined

Start with your bias tape right side facing down. Fold the bias tape in by 1/4″ at one end and press.

Starting with the folded end, place the bias tape on the inner rim of the lower cap with right sides together. Ensure that you line up the edge of the bias tape with the raw edge. Pin the bias tape to the inner rim of the lower cap, easing the tape as you go.

Continue around the entire inner rim until you reach the folded edge where you started, overlap by 1/2” (1.3cm) and cut off the excess bias tape. Sew to attach.

Fold the bias tape to the inside and press. Fold under the raw edge of the bias tape by 1/4″ (6mm) and pin / clip as you continue around the inner rim on the wrong side. Sew to attach from the wrong side at 1/8” (3mm) from the folded edge of the bias tape.

Place the upper and  lower cap pieces right sides together. Pin or clip in place. Sew to attach. Tip: Sewing a curve is much easier using a shorter stitch length.

Clip evenly around the outer circumference of the cap. Ensure that you do not cut through any of the stitches.

Turn the cap right side out. Press to flatten the seam. Tip: Use a tailor’s ham to press the curved seams safely and easily. Alternatively, use an oven mitt or other heat resistant glove under the cap to safely press the curved seams.

If adding a pom pom, hand sew the pom pom to the centre of the upper cap on the right side.

If desired, add a sweet little bow on the side using a grosgrain ribbon no wider than 3/8” (1 cm). Cut a length of 9.5” (24.1cm) for the bow. Sew the ribbon at the mid point to your preferred place on the lower cap. Proceed to tie a bow. For a short video on how to tie a bow, watch the Tying A Bow tutorial: https://www.peonypatterns.com/pages/tying-a-bow

The unlined version is now complete!

Constructing the Cap - Lined

Place the upper and lower cap pieces right sides together. Pin or clip in place. Sew to attach.

Clip evenly around the circumference of the cap. Ensure that you do not cut through any of the stitches. Repeat for the lining pieces.Tip: Sewing a curve is much easier using a shorter stitch length. If adding a pom pom, this is the ideal time to hand sew it to the centre of the upper cap on the right side.

Turn the cap right side out. Press and flatten the seam. Tip: Use a tailor’s ham to press the curved seams safely and easily. Alternatively, use an oven mitt or other heat resistant glove under the cap to safely press the curved seams.

With right sides together, pin the lining to the main cap, leaving a 1 1/2” (3.8cm) to 2” (5cm) opening. Sew to attach.

Clip evenly around the circumference of the cap. Ensure that you do not cut through any of the stitches. Turn the cap inside out. Press the seam allowance inside the opening and pin.

Slip stitch the opening to close by hand or alternatively, topstitch the opening closed using a 1/8” (3mm) seam allowance.

Press again to flatten the seam.
